Stand Up Against Lyme : New URI Almuni Affinity Chapter

Date: 04.01.2011

Stand Up Against Lyme

We've launched StandUpAgainstLyme.org, a brand new URI Almuni Affinity Chapter! Our goal is to allow URI Alumni to stand up and be counted against the spread of tick-borne disease. We strongly urge you to visit the new site and submit your story.

How many URI alums have had Lyme disease? Can we join together to help get some relief? Will our collective voices, when bundled with those of thousands of other victims, prompt political action finally leading to solutions to the tick problem? We hope you'll accept this invitation -- to STAND UP and be COUNTED -- as one who has been impacted by ticks and the diseases they carry.

Not URI Alumni? We'd still like to hear from you with any questions you may have or if you're willing to support this cause! If you're not a URI Alumni, this is a brand new initiative and we're still exploring how to best involve people not affiliated with the university.

Tell us your story : StandUpAgainstLyme.org

New video: How Do Deer Ticks Become Infected?

Date: 08.01.2010

How do Deer Ticks become infected?

In the eastern and mid-western U.S., deer tick LARVAE hatch from eggs in late June. Previously engorged female ticks lay an average of 1,500 eggs in May. That makes A LOT of LARVAE!!

Now, in August, the LARVAE begin to attach and feed on anything they can find. Rodents such as white-footed mice and chipmunks are the prime targets for these tiny blood suckers. Rodents also carry pathogens that cause Lyme Disease, Babesiosis, and Human Anaplasmosis. Deer ticks become infected as LARVAE when they ingest these pathogens from rodents along with their blood meal, making August a really important month in the disease transmission cycle.

Babesia are malaria-like parasites transmitted by blood feeding ticks. Take a look at TERC's 3 minute video on YouTube, demonstrating the life cycle of Babesia microti, starting in the blood of white-footed mice.
